Multiculturalism and segregation are notions which, to a certain extent, can oppose
each other. In their common usage, the first refers to situations of plurality, as the other
pertains essentially to the act of isolation. This research is proposing to deepen the
comprehension of these concepts, and to illustrate the findings according to the results of an
empirical work led in the multiethnic neighborhood of El Cerezo, located in the district of
Macarena in northern Sevilla.
Furthermore, considering the context of globalization, the focus of this study is to
understand how the “living together” process is constructed, and the interactions between
natives and immigrants. Consequently, equal consideration is given to the study of the local
associations, of the inhabitants of the multicultural neighborhoods, and of the public policies.
